American Culture With a long history of the United States of America as well as its mixture in cultures and ethnic groups, the culture of the United States is a western culture. Some important holidays include Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Sports are also an important part of the national culture. Baseball is among four most popular sports in the U.S. (in addition to American football, basketball, and ice hockey). VALENTINE'S DAY
 Valentine's Day (or Saint Valentine's Day) is on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, candy, or flowers. This special holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Valentine's Day was imported into North America in the 19th century by British settlers. In the United States, the first mass-produced valentines of embossed paper lace were produced and sold shortly after 1847 by Esther Howland (1828-1904) of Worcester, Massachusetts. In the second half of the 20th century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manners of gifts in the United States, usually from a man to a woman. Such gifts typically include roses and chocolates. In the 1980s, the diamond industry began to promote Valentine's Day as an occasion for giving jewelry. Hearts by Milan, Age 6.
In some North American elementary schools, students are asked to give a Valentine card or small gift to everyone in the class. The greeting cards of these students often mention what they appreciate about each other.
EASTER
Easter, also known as Pascha (Greek Πάσχα: Passover), the Feast of the Resurrection, the Sunday of the Resurrection, or Resurrection Day, is the most important religious feast of the Christian  liturgical year. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, which his followers believe occurred on the third day after his death by crucifixion some time in the period AD 27 to 33. 
Throughout North America, the Easter holiday has been partially secularized, so that some families participate only in the attendant revelry. Practically, the families start decorating Easter eggs on Saturday evening and searching for them Sunday morning, by which time they have been mysteriously hidden all over the house and garden. According to the children's stories, the eggs were hidden overnight and other treats delivered by the Easter Bunny in an Easter basket which children find waiting for them when they wake up. The Easter Bunny's motives for doing this are seldom clarified. Many families in America will attend Sunday Mass or services in the morning and then participate in a feast or party in the afternoon.

HALLOWEEN
Halloween is a tradition celebrated on the night of October 31, by children dressing in costumes and going door-to-door "Trick-or-Treating" to collect sweets, fruit, and other gifts. Apart from this trick-or-treating, there are many other traditional Halloween activities. Some of these include costume parties, watching horror films, going to "haunted" houses, and traditional autumn activities such as hayrides. Many people also decorate their houses and yards. The largest outdoor Halloween event in America is New York's Village Halloween Parade, which takes place on Halloween night in Greenwich Village. Halloween has become a part of American pop culture in the late twentieth century.           THANKSGIVING
 Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks, traditionally to God, for the things one has at the end of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Certain kinds of food are traditionally served at Thanksgiving meals. First and foremost, turkey is usually the featured item on any Thanksgiving feast table (so much so that Thanksgiving is sometimes referred to as "Turkey Day"). Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, other fall vegetables, and pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner. All of these primary dishes are actually native to the Americas or were introduced as a new food source to the Europeans when they arrived. Christmas Day, December 25, is an annual holiday that marks the birth of Jesus. Christmas combines the celebration of Jesus' birth with various other non-related traditions and customs, many of which were influenced by ancient winter festivals. Christmas traditions include the display of Nativity scenes and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve night. Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill, giving, compassion, and quality family time. The Christmas holiday has become the biggest day for giving gifts in the United States. BASEBALL
Baseball is the second most popular sport in the US. It has been a popular sport since the turn of the 20th century. Professional baseball began in the United States around 1865, and the National League was founded in 1876 as the first true major league. Major League Baseball teams play almost every day from April to October. The World Series is the championship series of Major League Baseball each October. It is a bat-and-ball game in which a pitcher throws (pitches) a hard, fist-sized, leather-covered ball toward a batter on the opposing team. The batter attempts to hit the baseball with a tapered cylindrical bat, made of wood (for professional baseball) or a variety of other materials (allowed in many nonprofessional games). A team scores runs only when batting, by advancing its players -- primarily via hits -- counterclockwise past a series of four markers called bases arranged at the corners of a ninety-foot square, or "diamond." The game, played without time restriction, is structured around nine segments called innings. In each inning, both teams are given the opportunity to bat and score runs; a team's half-inning ends when three outs are recorded against that team. Players on one team (the offense) take turns hitting while the other team (the defense) tries to stop them from scoring runs by getting hitters out in any of several ways. A player on offense can stop at any of the bases and hope to score on a teammate's hit. A home run is a hit in which the batter is able to circle all the bases, ending at home plate and scoring a run himself (along with a run scored by each runner who was already on base), which results in the batter advancing for extra bases. The teams switch between offense and defense whenever the team on defense gets three outs. One turn on offense for each team constitutes an inning; nine innings make up a professional game.
